Lesotho

OVERVIEW

A kingdom in the sky

Surrounded entirely by South Africa, Lesotho boasts stunning mountain landscapes, a rich culture, and a history deeply rooted in its Basotho heritage. Despite being known as the "Water Tower of Southern Africa" due to its abundant water resources, Lesotho faces a significant challenge in providing clean drinking water to its population. According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Program, approximately 90.76% of Lesotho's rural population lacks access to managed clean drinking water, with many relying on unsafe sources like rivers and unprotected springs. The scarcity of clean water leads to the spread of waterborne diseases, such as diarrhea, which remains a leading cause of illness and death among children under five. Addressing Lesotho's water crisis is critical not only for improving public health but also for fostering sustainable development and reducing poverty in this vulnerable nation.
